{Graphic: Where small successes have big rewards!} Kalamazoo RESA’s Croyden Avenue School serves students from all nine districts within Kalamazoo County. There are two programs housed at Croyden.
The Cognitively Impaired Program serves students age 3-26 who have moderate to severe cognitive impairments or severe multiple impairments. Some students are very medically fragile and require nursing support throughout the day.
The Autism Program serves students age 2-26 who have an autism spectrum disorder. In addition to the classrooms in the Croyden building, there are a number of satellite Croyden classrooms located in the local school districts (Parchment Schools, Portage Public Schools, Schoolcraft Community Schools).
Students in both programs who are in elementary through post high school classrooms learn to be as independent as they can in caring for their personal needs, assisting in daily living activities (cooking, cleaning, laundry), practice a variety of work skills, and develop ways to communicate through speech, sign language, pictures or voice output devices. Students are out in the community each week learning to safely navigate, communicate with community workers, participate in recreation and leisure activities, learn to use money to make purchases and of course, to have fun! Several partnerships with local school buildings are growing, which give our students opportunities to interact with peers without disabilities.
Students in the Autism Program who attend a satellite classroom attend general education classrooms for a variety of activities in addition to building independence in functional life skills.
